Tiger’s Eye, found worldwide across most of the Earth’s continents, is a well-known gem long associated with various legends and superstitions. With its instantly recognisable chatoyant appearance that mirrors the eye of the majestic cat of the same name, the Tiger’s Eye is considered by many to hold a hidden universe within its silky lustre. Fans of the world’s most curious myths and legends, it’s no surprise that this supposed magical stone is the inspiration behind the latest creation for our Talisman collection. So, together, let’s dive into the weird and wonderful stories surrounding the Tiger’s Eye Quartz!
Cast your mind back to ancient Egypt, a time when pharaohs reigned and pyramids reached for the heavens. In this age, jewellery was worn to boast one’s power and wealth. Tiger’s Eye was draped and adorned as a symbol of royalty, and wearers believed that the stone would grant them even greater luck. One entertaining Egyptian legend tells the tale of Hathor, a goddess with a terrible, ungodly temper. As the story goes, Hathor, the wife of Ra (the patron of the sun), would magically transform into the lioness Sekhmet before wreaking havoc on the world. Realising he should probably stop his moody wife, Ra crafted the “Eye of Ra”, known nowadays as a symbol of royal authority. With the Eye of Ra, made using Tiger’s Eye, Hathor was calmed and peace was once restored.
Tiger’s Eye Quartz is linked to another goddess- this time a Hindu deity (and much less temperamental!). Many Indian folk believe the Tiger’s Eye to represent bravery, strength, and protection – all qualities of the fierce warrior goddess, Durga – who is often depicted riding a tiger. In these parts, Tiger’s Eye has thus been coined, “Durga’s stone”, and bears those who wear it with inner-strength and confidence.
Another otherworldly association that we will share is with the god Bacchus, the god of wine and fertility (yes- amazingly- there is a god of wine!). The Romans would therefore use Tiger’s Eye to promote clear-thinking and protect against drunkenness. Well, that’s no fun! As depicted in illustrations, Bacchus wore a crown of Tiger’s Eye stones, enabling him to indulge without embarrassing himself.
A key element in Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese traditional practice that claims to use energy forces to harmonise individuals with their surroundings, Tiger’s Eye Quartz is used as a cure to mitigate any unwanted negative energies. While others believe that this sacred stone helps with fatigue, sadness, and negativity, promoting mental clarity in times of stress and uncertainty. Another use by the Chinese is during wedding ceremonies- where it is believed to bring about good luck for the happy couple. Finally (in fact, there are more uses!), Tiger’s Eye is sometimes used in traditional Chinese medicine to enhance clairvoyance, which is the ability to predict the future.
Tiger’s Eye is thought in some African cultures to boast the ability to fend off the “evil eye”, a curse brought about by a malevolent glare and usually given to a person when one is unaware. Have no fear, though, as the mighty Tiger’s Eye Quartz is luckily strong enough to prevent such a curse, and will help its wearer to stay grounded and centred. Well, that’s a relief!
