The four-leaf clover is a delicate plant that is found mostly in the Northern Hemisphere, yet known around the world as the representation of good luck. This famous flower is a rare variation of the common three-leaf clover, and it is said that he who stumbles across a four-leaf clover will be blessed with eternal good luck and prosperity!

Four-leaf clovers are perhaps most commonly misconstrued with Irish tradition. It is said that when St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century, he used the three-leaf clover, otherwise known as a shamrock, to explain the Holy Trinity. Soon, the fourth leaf came to symbolize God’s grace – or luck.

Other stories claim that Ireland is home to more four-leaf clovers than anywhere else. So, now we know where the famous phrase, “luck of the Irish”, derives!

While it’s unclear exactly when the four-leaf clover began to gain its fame, one citing can be dated back to the 1600s. English author, John Melton, wrote, “If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing.”

According to the Celts, the special four-leaf clover allowed the bearer to see these magical and mischievous little creatures! Carrying a clover meant that you were able to take action if you spotted a fairy, who were known for playing deadly tricks on unsuspecting mortals.

While the origins of this unique plant’s charm can’t be defined, one thing remains certain: with only 1 in 5,000 clovers bearing 4 petals instead of 3, finding one in nature is something to celebrate. For this reason, we have infused the four-leaf clover powder into our latest BENU creation: our mystical and mesmerizing Four Leaf Clover fountain pen!
