Cat’s Eye Quartz, known also as Cymophane, is a unique gemstone that boasts an enchanting unique opalescence. Resembling a feline’s eye, the Cat’s Eye is transformed from an ordinary quartz into a spellbinding spectacle. Achieved by a glare reflection from tiny inclusions of hollow tubes, the result is a mesmerising play of light, mimicking the gaze of a vigilant cat. Yet, beyond this stone’s captivating aesthetic lay a whole host of magical myths; from its power to bring about good luck, to its numerous healing properties. Found in various corners of this Earth in differing shades of amber, yellow, green, and black, the Cat’s Eye Quartz is most commonly believed to bring about good luck and prosperity. Not a bad start! Known in Brazil as “olho de gato”, it is said that if one carries this special stone in their purse, it can attract financial abundance. While Brazilian folklore claims that the gem even contains healing properties, making it a useful cure for treating various ailments.

There is a rather violent legend in Roman mythology that tells the tale of Diana, the goddess of the moon. It is said that the Cat’s Eye Quartz contained Diana’s magical powers, and could too enhance psychic abilities. Supposedly, a young hunter named Actaeon stumbled across the goddess as she was bathing in a spring. Furious, Diana transformed Actaeon into a deer, and his own hunting dogs proceeded to devour him. As legend goes, the Cat’s Eye was formed from Actaeon’s eyes, as a warning to others should they (even accidentally) intrude on the goddess’ territory.

Another tale – this one a little less hawkish – points us in the direction of Madagascar, where folk coined the Cat’s Eye “volon-dry”, meaning “cat’s tail”. Named so due to dwarf-like supernatural creatures called “Kalanoro” whose tails closely resembled the unique glare and depth of the Cat’s Eye Quartz. Apparently, Kalanoro, seen as mischievous creatures that could bring about either good or bad luck, would scour the forests in search of tucked-away gemstones and gold, and use their magical powers to protect their findings.

Associated with the planet Ketu (a “shadow planet”), Hindu mythology considers the Cat’s Eye Quartz a protective stone with the ability to ward off malevolent beings. Ketu is said to play a leading role in spiritual development, and can enhance one’s psychic insight. Thus, with Cat’s Eye containing the energy of Ketu, people believed in the stone’s protective ability and would thus wear it on their person in the form of an amulet.

But it’s not just in India that the Cat’s Eye was worn as a talisman- in medieval Europe, this protective stone was given to knights and warriors to guard them during battle. This small yet mighty gem could somehow grant the fighter with courage, strength, and perseverance. Additionally, Cat’s Eye had other abilities- specifically the capacity to grant bearers with the power of invisibility. Intriguing!
